CSD 17 and Rio+20

The UN Commission on Sustainable Development saw a number of people and organisatiosn write articles for Outreach Issues endorsing Rio+20. This included the tarde unions, local government, canadian youth and the business community. The Brazilian Governemnt side event in the second week had over 180 people from governments and stakeholders and UN bodies eager to hear what the Brazilian Government thought shoudl be the issues. Their presentation suggested reform of sustainable development governance, greening the economy, reviewing progress on Agenda 21 and the JPoI and looking at emerging issues such as water and energy.

The joint radio project for the CSD by Stakeholder Forum and the BBC World Serice Trust covered Rio+20 a number of times. This included the green table - listen to his provocative discussion with Juan Hoffmaister (Third World Network), Bedrich Moldan of the Czech Republic, and André Odenbreit of Brazil. In the last issue of Today at the CSD delegates are asked what they want from Rio +20

  1. Hello,

Thank you for your work for Earth Summit 2012. I have noticed a wide interest in the possibility of a declaration for "planetary rights" to be signed at this summit. Ecuador has put "rights of nature" into its new constitution, a remarkable achievement which opens up for a whole new perspective on nature as a legal "person" and gives a much stronger protection for ecological systems than what is available today (se www.celdf.org, the organization that built the legal foundation for this). Personally I think "rights of nature" is a more powerful and communicative statement than "planetary rights". In any case, I agree with the people that hold this to be as historical as human rights once were. I would appreciate to hear your perspective on this issue, and on the possibilities of creating a universal declaration with this theme at the Earth Summit 2012. Best regards/ Niklas Högberg

  2. Dear Niklas
As the issues for a Summit are still very much open then such a deeclaration might be possible. The Earth Charter is something that Maurice Strong tried to have agreed at 1992, 2002 perhaps it would be good to link in with the Earth Charter Movement - some great people

  4. www.RightsofMotherEarth.com/presents a global grassroots campaign to bring about the rights of nature. Our goal is to gather 1 million letters and signatures on petitions addressed to world leaders by Rio+20. A youth delegation will deliver them at Rio+20. You can also visit one of our petition sites at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/yes-to-rights-of-nature/. We are sponsored by the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature at http://therightsofnature.org/. I too support the Earth Charter and would love to see it expanded to include Rights of Nature more specifically. Thanks to all, Robin
