About this Research Topic submit here Approximately 40% of the world’s population live and work in coastal areas and according to forecasts, this could increase to 70% within the next 50 years. Currently, 15 megacities (cities with a population greater than 10 million inhabitants) are located on the coast. Coastal cities are facing increasing problems due to rising global temperatures and higher risks from increasingly costly flooding as sea levels rise. For most coastal cities, the current defenses against storm surges and flooding will not be enough to prepare for the rising sea levels accompanying climate change. A new breed of research and innovation is needed to inform policymakers. Increasing sea level by 1.7mm/year changes the shape of coastlines and contributes to coastal erosion, leading to flooding and more underground salt-water intrusion.
