Readout of meetings of President von der Leyen, Executive Vice-President Timmermans and High-Representative/Vice-President Borrell with the COP28 President

Republished from 7th of June  Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans and High-Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell met with COP28 President Designate Dr Sultan Al-Jaber to discuss preparations for COP28, the 2023 UNFCCC climate conference, which will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November to 12 December. Dr Sultan was joined by HE Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and recently appointed Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the UAE to the European Union. They reconfirmed today their commitment to work together to facilitate the highest possible ambition at this year's UNFCCC conference, and agreed on the importance of several critical elements that could frame an ambitious COP28 outcome: Urging all Parties to align their national efforts with the shared commitment to achieve the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement, including to pursue efforts to keep global temperature increase

June 5th is the 50th World Environment Day, where each year, the significance of transformative action from across the world is crucial to help people and the planet. This year’s World Environment Day is being hosted by Côte d'Ivoire in partnership with the Netherlands with a theme of ‘ Finding Solutions for Plastic Pollution .  We as youth activists and part of the Arizona State University Sustain Earth project see plastic pollution everywhere, but just how big is this problem? To put it in perspective, more than 400 million tons of plastic are manufactured annually, with over half of it designed for single-use purposes. Shockingly, less than 10% of this plastic is recycled, which creates a colossal issue for our environment and human health. It was my first business trip since my son was born. I had to dust off my luggage and my suit jacket, but the early flight was a breeze, I’m now accustomed to being up at 5am. I was heading to Melbourne for the RIAA Conference, I’d been invited to host a panel on impact investing (I’ll write about that next week), but I was able to catch some other sessions. After two days, I was left with two key takeaways: 1.       Every investment manager and super fund is hurriedly reviewing their external reporting . The regulators have moved from talk, to action ,  on the topic of enforcing accuracy of sustainability claims. While everyone’s double-checking the language used, some have even pulled major portions of their reports, in what is being called  green-hushing . 2.       Greenwashing is a
