About this Research Topic
Approximately 40% of the world’s population live and work in coastal areas and according to forecasts, this could increase to 70% within the next 50 years. Currently, 15 megacities (cities with a population greater than 10 million inhabitants) are located on the coast. Coastal cities are facing increasing problems due to rising global temperatures and higher risks from increasingly costly flooding as sea levels rise. For most coastal cities, the current defenses against storm surges and flooding will not be enough to prepare for the rising sea levels accompanying climate change. A new breed of research and innovation is needed to inform policymakers.
Increasing sea level by 1.7mm/year changes the shape of coastlines and contributes to coastal erosion, leading to flooding and more underground salt-water intrusion. Increasing sea levels affect a significant number of people across the globe. For example, in Europe, one-third of the EU population lives within 50km of the coast, with a GDP generated by this population accounting for over 30% of the total EU GDP. The challenges of climate change need to be addressed through integrated approaches for management, long-term perspective analysis, and coherence between planning and management. Thus, carrying out research, collecting data, and forecasting are all essential to better manage the impacts of climate change, where adaptation measures must be implemented through adaptive governance approaches. We are looking for innovative research approaches and methodologies; analysis and implementation tools, such as utilizing artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing; as well as processes for stakeholders engagement, and case studies.
This Research Topic aims to publish review articles, data reports, opinions, case reports, empirical studies, new methods and original research on:
• Coastal management techniques, methodologies, and practices
• Governance and planning policies, and sustainability implications for coastal cities
• The complexity of vulnerabilities, adaptation responses, risk reduction, and resilience
• Scenarios analysis
• Stakeholder engagement studies
• Application of machine learning and artificial intelligence
• Metrics and indicators, tools for mapping, and datasets
